Over
the past 3 weeks I am happy to say that I have not had
one attack and my feelings of generalized anxiety are

feel as though I have total control over my life again,
which had been stolen from me years ago.
Firstly
many congratulations on an excellent and informative
site. I came across it when searching for articles on
hyperventilation which I know firmly believe has been
the cause of my health problems over the past six years.
In all the information I've read on hyperventilation I
have yet to come across a work which explained
everything in simple terms and detailed a comprehensive
plan of exercises. One of the things I learned was the a
symptom of hyperventilation is breathlessness - the
obvious way to counteract this is to breath harder, but
from reading your work and doing the exercises, I have
learned that this is the last thing one should do. Over
the past six years, I have had all types of medical
tests, attended psychological counseling and taken many
types of medication. I have been on anti-depressants
(Paxil) for the past five years, which have helped, but
certainly aren't a cure. Since beginning the exercises
over a month ago, I have cut my medication in half, with
the consent of my doctor. This is definitely a sign of
progress for the first time in over six years.
I
was feeling symptoms of panic as I woke from a good
night sleep and I asked myself, "WHY!" To distract
myself the Internet seemed to be a good place to start.
Using Netscape, I search for Panic Disorders and came
across your home page; and saved it of course. In
combination with therapy at school, your material was
extremely useful to me in controlling my attacks that
used to occur quite frequently. I'm glad that there is a

was recently diagnosed with panic disorder. Luckily for
me it only took several attacks and one visit to the
emergency room before I found the right doctor who
diagnosed my disorder. I am currently on medication and
tried to go without it for a week but I relapsed just
discovered your web page for self help in breathing
techniques and have so far found your discoveries to be
true. I have always been breathing with my upper chest
and neck. for as long as I can remember) I have just
started the breathing exercises and will continue to do
so until I can breath like a normal person. It has given
me new hope that I may be able to get on with my life
again with out the use of medication. I hope your web
page reaches many other terrified souls with panic
disorder, trying to find a normal life again.
The
hyperventilation has been causing the panic, because of
all the terrible feelings that come with
hyperventilation -- fast heartbeat, tight chest,
dizziness, fear of passing out or suffocating, weakness,
shakiness, etc. And the panic caused more
hyperventilating, and so on, and so on. I would like to
put to you a theory, one that I believe applies to me,
and possibly to many people: for as long as I can
remember, I have deliberately NOT relaxed my stomach and
diaphragm muscles, until it has become a lifelong habit.
A habit to suck in that stomach, don't show that little
pooch (or big pooch, depending on weight gain and loss),
don't wear a girdle, but let the abdominal and diaphragm
muscles be a 'natural' girdle, which is surely an
unnatural girdle! This holding in is such a part of me,
I do it while sitting at the table eating! I wonder how
many other people (I'll bet especially women) are doing
this very thing? Thank you for your wonderful
information and instruction on good breathing habits.
I
wanted to send this message along to thank you for your
on-line advice. I have been having a great deal of
difficulty with stress over the past few months, and
really thought I was going "nuts". I figured the
Internet was a last resort, but I gave it a try. First,
I found the Panic Attack home page which did not offer
too much encouragement in the way of self help. It
seemed to emphasize drugs and cognitive therapy. I then
found your page, and with a great deal of skepticism,
tried your breathing advice. In fact, the more I read,
the more I recognized the symptoms you described. I
literally had tears in my eyes! (Men aren't supposed to
cry, right?) Today is Thursday the 13th, and I found
your site on Monday the 10th. In these few short days my
attitude and outlook on life have improved tremendously,
and most of all the feelings of anxiousness and panic
have virtually disappeared (this despite changes in work
conditions, pending litigation for my company and a new
baby due in less than one month!). I am literally amazed
that something which seems so small and trivial could

do I begin... I have suffered from Panic attacks for
about 14 years (since I was 21). For much of that time,
I was taking medication - first Imipramine and later
Zoloft. I also went through various psychological
support tactics (analysis, group therapy, cognitive
therapy, etc.). Interesting, at no time did anyone talk
